Agriculture and Livelihoods

Strengthen household resilience through agriculture and livelihoods.

All programmes

Seeds, tools, training and savings groups — so households can feed themselves, earn an income, and weather the next shock.

The Agriculture and Livelihood Department aims to strengthen household resilience, by enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable economic empowerment, particularly among vulnerable and crisis-affected populations. The department adopts a holistic and integrated approach that recognizes the strong link between economic vulnerability, social protection risks, and psychosocial well-being. In this regard, BCC integrates livelihood programming with mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) as well as protection services, ensuring that interventions not only improve income and food access but also contribute to dignity, social cohesion, and overall well-being. The department prioritizes inclusive approaches that target women, youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities. The department further promotes climate resilience and environmentally sustainable practices to mitigate the effects of climate change and shocks on livelihoods, while strengthening local capacities and market systems.

Highlights
  • Strengthening Household Food Security: The program supports communities to improve access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food through climate-smart agriculture, home gardening, livestock support, and improved farming practices. This reduces dependency and enhances basic survival and stability.
  • Income Generation and Economic Empowerment: It promotes diverse and sustainable livelihood opportunities such as small businesses, vocational skills, savings groups, and micro-enterprises. This enables households to increase income, reduce poverty, and improve living conditions.
  • Skills Development and Capacity Building: The program equips individuals especially youth and women with practical skills in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and vocational trades. This enhances employability, self-reliance, and long-term economic resilience.
  • Resilience and Recovery Support: Agriculture and livelihoods programming helps communities recover from shocks such as conflict, displacement, or climate crises by restoring productive assets, rebuilding income sources, and strengthening adaptive capacity.
  • Market Access and Value Chain Development: It supports communities to connect with markets, improve production quality, and engage in value chains, ensuring that agricultural and livelihood activities are sustainable and profitable.
  • Integration with MHPSS and Protection: Livelihoods programming is designed to reduce stress, vulnerability, and negative coping mechanisms, while linking beneficiaries to MHPSS and Protection services where needed. Economic stability contributes directly to psychosocial wellbeing and safety.
